Last year, I returned to explore several ancient forts during the monsoon. And somewhere between the ruins, the drifting clouds, and the forests slowly swallowing what men had once built, I encountered something that stayed with me long after I returned home. Not a particular smell, but an entire atmosphere. Something so beautiful, so strangely haunting, that I knew I would eventually have to recreate it.

There is a peculiar silence inside an ancient fort after the rain. The stones are cold, almost breathing with moisture. Centuries of weather have softened their surfaces, and thick, velvety moss has quietly occupied every available crevice. Beneath it lies that extraordinary earthy sweetness of freshly disturbed, rain-soaked soil. The air carries a mineral coolness, occasionally interrupted by the green, rosy breath of wild geranium growing between the stones. And somewhere in those untouched corners, far away from the usual tourist trails, jasmine releases its fragrance into the mist. You cannot always see where it comes from. You simply walk into it, and a moment later, it disappears.

What fascinated me was how nature had taken possession of these enormous structures without making the slightest announcement. Walls that once protected kingdoms now sheltered moss. Roots had found their way through stone. Flowers bloomed where footsteps had vanished centuries ago. There was melancholy, certainly, but also an extraordinary tenderness. I began to wonder whether I was smelling the forest, the ruins, or the passage of time itself. That question became the beginning of Gorgeous Ruins.

Back at my perfume organ, I realised that recreating this experience would require much more than assembling a conventional earthy fragrance. I needed to reconstruct the contrasts. The cold mineral impression of wet stone against the quiet warmth of the earth. The deep, almost tactile softness of moss against the fleeting floral presence of the wilderness. Patchouli provided the damp, dark foundation; moss gave the composition its velvety green character. Iris brought a cool, almost distant elegance, while rose and subtle aromatic nuances suggested flowers growing where nobody had planted them. Leather and agarwood introduced the aged, woody darkness of those forgotten structures, and musk brought everything together like a thin veil of mist. I kept working on the relationship between these materials, trying to make the individual notes disappear into an atmosphere.

Because Gorgeous Ruins was never meant to smell like a collection of ingredients. I wanted the wearer to experience that moment when the rain has stopped, the clouds are descending, and an ancient fort appears through the mist, almost as though it has been waiting for someone.

I cannot bottle centuries of history. Nor can I reproduce the Sahyadris exactly.

But perhaps, for a few hours, I can make you feel as though you have wandered into a place the world has forgotten.

And discovered that nature never did.

— Artisan Dixit
Perito Moreno artisanal perfumes

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0936/6827/8569/files/pm-cut-mb-gorgeous-ruins_c24252e4-6567-40ee-b1ea-ff03cbbdaf8a.png?v=1793498977
